Oil Execs Chortle as Obama Admin Promotes Renewables

New York Times - Green Inc. -- HOUSTON -- Renewable energy is being praised in Washington, but it is generating snickers here in the nation's traditional energy capital, where oil, gas and utility leaders are gathered for a major industry conference.

Leaders of two of the world's largest oil and gas companies used their addresses at CERAWeek, a sprawling conference sponsored by energy analysis firm IHS Cambridge Energy Research Associates, to warn against unbridled optimism about wind and solar energy. Khalid Al-Falih, president and CEO of Saudi Aramco, deemed overreliance on renewable power dangerous, while ConocoPhillips Chairman James Mulva employed sarcasm to compare renewable boosters to those who won't acknowledge climate change.

"We must overcome the opposition of the 'hydrocarbon deniers,'"

Alternative energy costs will drop in the future as technology improves and demand for it increases as opposed to what the oil industry is doing. Big oil already has the technology and has been in place for many years and what do they do . . . . "STICK IT TO THE CONSUMER".

We not only need "Alternative Energy"; BUT, we need new staffing as well. We need to keep the oil people and Wall Street people out of the alternative energy field of play; thus giving it a chance to improve our economics.

Enough . . . same old . . . . same old !!!!

Of course they "chortle," as they don't want to see any research and development into alternative, renewable resources.

Big Oil doesn't want to lose their stake so of course they'll talk down anything that doesn't use oil.

Renewables helps but it's not the answer. We still need the fossil fuel.

I think cheap wind power is the correct answer but at 18 to 20K $$$ for 10KW unit then the tower and inverter it can slip in the 30K range, I not sure the payback is there yet.

It seems to me the Wind turbines are over priced about 50%, they pricing then to only break even after 8-10 years. We need a better incentive.

There is still a lot of oil and natural gas around and a lot to be discovered. The Key is to make more efficient use of the energy we use today and in time alternatives will present them selves.

While these guys have an agenda, it is NOT good when the President of the United States, the leader of the free world, is so openly marked. However, with the Current Occupant we have the most mockable incompetent since a Peanut Farmer from Georgia held the office.

It is not good when a President holds on to an ideology that makes no sense. The Great Mistake of 2008 is doing long-term damage to the nation.

Obama may promote renewables but his reelection is fueled by big oil. Just like any other politico, he/she says what you want to hear and does what they need to be reelected.

They should use their "addresses" to realize we need two things; 1) independence from foreign oil, 2) affordable, energy (clean).

Wind farms and solar panels up the landscape and alter the habitat for wildlife. Sooner or later the greenies will take exception and side with
the oil companies. Imagine that.

Of course the oil execs are going to trash renewable... they are only worried about their wallets... the Obama admin only cares about renewable...

A novel idea, pursue all forms of energy...

If every house had solar panel roofs, a small windmill and geo-thermal taking care of most of the needs of each home, that frees up all kinds of energy for other stuff... the current generation in power is as stupid and greedy as it gets...
